Bounteous Bhutan Home to Magical Monasteries

Phobjikha Valley

A stunning bowl-shaped glacial valley, the Phobjikha Valley is also known by the name of Gangteng Valley. It is situated amidst Black Mountains, edging the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. The best known marshland in Bhutan, the valley is also popular for its cultural uniqueness too. The incredible variety of fauna of this place make many jaws drop, especially the globally threatened black-necked cranes Grus nigricollis.

Attractions

Gangte Goemba ? A popular attraction of the Phobjikha Valley, the Gangte Goemba houses the central goemba, monks’ quarters and serene meditation hubs. This 450 year old monastery is serene and is an ideal place to meditate.

Serenity seekers can also explore Damchen Lhakhang, a Buddhist temple. It is believed that this is the oldest in the village and dates back to the 14th century.

Nyelung Dechenling ? This unassuming chapel is one of the eight residences built by the 14th century Nyingma Dzogchen master Longchen Rabjam (Longchenpa). Although the interiors are quite plain, the resident monks can show some remarkable relics and narrate the tales of saints and miracles worthy of Chaucer.

Khewang Lhakhang ? The 15th century Khewang Lhakhang lies on the east side of the Phobjikha Valley, opposite Tabiting. Featuring three two storey statues of the past, present and future Buddhas, the Lhakhang has a tsechu on the third day of the ninth month. During the festival, local men (not monks) do the dancing, celebrating an ancient victory over local demons.
