Miraculous Maldives A Gateway to Underwater World

Tsunami Monument

Tsunami Monument is a sad reminder of 26th of December 2004 when South Asia was struck by an unfortunate earthquake of 9.1 to 9.3 magnitude. The earthquake erupted under the sea and triggered a series of tsunamis. People were swept away by waves reaching as high as 100 feet. This Tsunami mostly affected countries like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, Indonesia and India.

This natural disaster led to destruction of life and property. This Tsunami Monument was raised in Male which is visited by every vacationer visiting Maldives. The monument tells numerous stories and takes you back to that time. It has a beautiful design rising above the landscape. The balls surrounding the main edifice are above the landscape and symbolize the twenty atolls of the Maldives. There are iron rods placed in the centre of the monument representing lives lost during that natural calamity. The names of Tsunami victims are engraved on these rods.

The monument gives goose bumps to all visitors by reminding that day of tragedy. The monument has been constructed at the island’s best surfing beach, in the southeast of Mal?. People usually visit here during evening hours to enjoy splendid sunset views.
