Namtso Lake
Namtso or Lake Nam remains the second largest salt water lake in China. This is also the world’s highest lake and is loved by vacationers for its heavenly beauty. The lake is found between the Damxung County of Lhasa and the Bango County of Nagqu region.
Namtso Lake literally translates to “Heavenly Lake” in the Tibetan language. Located at a height of 4,740 meters above sea level, it is around 70 kilometres long and 30 kilometres broad. As the lake is so high, travellers often feel altitude sickness here. ???The water to the lake is supplied by the melted snow of the Nyenchen Tangula Mountains. The lake is enriched with lush grass growing around and flaunts the best pasture land of northern Tibet. The lake houses 5 islands apart from 5 peninsulas. The Zaxi Peninsula remains the largest of all with attractions like the Zaxi Monastery, karst caves, stone forest and natural bridges.
During the month of April when ice melts, the lake’s water turns into a beautiful turquoise colour shadowing splendid views of the nearby mountains. It is a perfect place to soak yourself into some unseen facades of nature and rejuvenate your senses with immense serenity.
Namtso Lake is also visited by many pilgrims from Tibet who take complete circle of the lake in around 20 to 30 days.
Namtso Lake also houses a dramatic wildlife. Here you can spot the sheep and yaks grazing peacefully. Other commonly spotted animals around the lake include wild yaks, donkey, wild fox, etc. Visit here during the sunset or sunrise to fall in love with the divine beauty of this place. Many photographers spend days here to capture perfect views of nature sprawling here.
