Enigmatic Nepal An Abode of Flamboyant Flags

Phewa Tal

Every traveler’s major attraction in Pokhra, Phewa Lake is the second largest lake in Nepal. Phewa Tal offers a perfect escape from the hustle bustle of downtown Kathamandu. The southwestern steep of the lake is densely forested and alive with birdlife. The lush Rani Ban, or Queen’s Forest, bestows an emerald hue to the lake, and on a clear day the Annapurna Mountains are perfectly reflected on its mirror surface. The docile waters of the lake are perfect to spend a sunny afternoon beside the lake.

Attractions
Tal Barahi Temple ? One of the major attractions of the Phewa Lake is the Tal Barahi Temple. It is the most important religious monument of Pokhara. This two-storied pagoda is believed to be dedicated to one of the Hindu gods known as Vishnu.

Baidam ? Baidam is the eastern banks of Phewa Lake, also known as Lakeside. With seemingly endless strip of hotels, lodges, restaurants, bookshops and souvenir shops, this side is one of the best known tourist area of Nepal. It is also the starting point of the tour to Pokhara.

Peace Temple ? Situated on a hilltop watching over Phewa Lake is the World Peace Pagoda also known as Peace Temple and Shanti Stupa. Constructed by Buddhist monks from the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji organization as a symbol of peace, this temple is a must visit.

Shopping ? The market stretched on the entrance of Phewa Tal is popularly known as the lakeside and is the perfect destination for shopping, eating, hanging out or just following the peaceful trail.

Boat Rides ? From the buzzing lakeside area, you can hire a boat and take on the Phewa Lake for better views of the encircling mountains. Some boat rides would leave you at the other end of the shore to trek up to the Peace Pagoda.

The Lake also serves as a great place to indulge in some water activities like kayaking, boating or (on occasion during the Springtime winds) sailing. You can take to the lake in one of the brightly painted doongas (boats) available for rent at Lakeside. Many people walk or cycle around the lakeshore ? the trek up to the World Peace Pagoda affords breathtaking views over the Tal to the mountains beyond.
