Lumbini

Lumbini is one of the popular destinations of Nepal, as it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The city has continued to be the central point of Buddhism. In the present times, Lumbini is a small quiet town in the southwestern Terai plains of Nepal, where the ruins of the old city can still be observed. A large stone pillar is said to be set up by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in 250 BC which bears a message about the birth of Gautama Buddha.

Attractions
The snow-capped mountains, the terraced fields, splashing rivers, pagoda styled temples, and everything about Lumbini attract tourists from around the world. A number of devotees as well as historically inclined tourists visit Nepal every year for the very purpose of witnessing the birthplace of Lord Buddha- Lumbini.

Ashokan Pillar is one of the major attractions of Lumbini. An inscribed pillar by King Ashoka was erected here in 249 BCE, and the inscription on the pillar is the oldest in Nepal. An important site for the history lovers and Buddhists, the pillar is one of the most visited sites in Nepal.

Bodhi Tree is also a famous attraction of Lumbini. It is a tree covered in prayer flags situated just beside the pond. People come here to make wishes in hope of them becoming true.

Situated inside the Maya devi temple complex, Mayadevi Pond is a major attraction among the tourists. It is the place where Buddha's mother used to take bath before giving him birth. It is also believed that the first bath of Siddhartha Gautama also took place here.

Japan Peace Stupa is also among the major attraction of Lumbini. This World Peace Pagoda is a 41m high structure situated at the northern end of the Gardens.

The Cambodian Monastery in Lumbini is also a must visit attraction here. The beautiful blend of colourful fantasy and spiritual forces, make the monastery one of the most fascinating temples of the region. The architectural design of the Monastery matched the famous Angkor Wat, and is surrounded by a square railing.

Another popular attraction in Lumbini is the Royal Thai Monastery, with an imposing and stunning wat-style monastery dedicated to Buddhist practices. The entire building is constructed with white marble. The beautiful designs and carving on the temple wall makes this place a must-visit.

Best time to visit Lumbini
The best season to visit Lumbini is from April - May when birth of Lord Buddha is celebrated in a grand manner. During this period, Hindus gather here in Maya devi temple, Mother of Lord Buddha.

How to reach Lumbini
The closest airport to Lumbini is at Bhairahawa (also known as Sidhhartha Nagar) 22km from Lumbini. Regular flights from Kathmandu are available to the airport.
