Enigmatic Nepal An Abode of Flamboyant Flags

Taumadhi Square

Taumadhi Square is a large plaza in Bhaktapur exuding intricate traditional temple architecture. Located next to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, it is the second most visited square in Bhaktapur after Durbar Square. In this square stand the beautiful two major temples to the north Nyatapola Temple which is one of the tallest temples in Nepal and east Bhairabnath Temple. It’s a lively square busy with both locals and tourists.

About Taumadhi Square
It's here that you can appreciate ancient life and "living heritage" in Bhaktapur quite well. However, do note that the pagoda styled building near the center of Taumadhi square is not a temple! It's a modern day restaurant.
Nepalese New Year celebration, Bisket Jatra, starts and is held in Taumadhi Square. During the festival, chariots are pulled through the streets and ultimately a tug of war over them determines who will be blessed with good fortune in the coming year. Taumadhi square in Bhaktapur includes a fantastic walking tour of the square.

Attractions

Nyatapola Temple ? Built in 1702 by King Bhupatindra Malla, this 30m high stone building survived the 1934 and 2015 earthquakes. You can climb the mighty stairway leading up the temple. It is also said that each of the guardians on either side are ten times stronger than the ones under it.

Bhairabnath Temple ? The Bhairabnath Temple is more interesting from outside than inside. The small brass figure at the open shrine in front of the temple is Bhairab.

Til Mahdav Narayan Temple ? One of the hidden temples located behind the dancing platform. Inside this courtyard is the main double roof Narayan (Vishnu) Temple, one of the oldest in the valley.

Other major attractions around the Square are the dancing platform surrounded by souvenir stalls, a set of wooden cart wheels and planks of wood around the Bhairabnath Temple.
