Agra

The city oozing love in the air, Agra remains an impressive caretaker of Indian history. This city in Uttar Pradesh has references going back to the epic Mahabharata. Agra evokes images of the epitome of eternal love, Taj Mahal. This one of the 7 wonders of the world is a masterpiece of unmatched architecture. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal houses the tomb of head body. The monument has Persian and Mughal architecture. The main edifice is built in white marble and is encircled by well-kept gardens. Today it is a known UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives travellers from all over the world.

Agra Fort is another wonder of the city which dates back to the 16th century. It is made of red sandstone with fortified walls. It houses Jahangir Palace and Khas Palace. Its life size hall of audiences called Diwan-i-Khas looks spectacular. Agra Fort was raised in 1565 edging the Yamuna River. The fort has two gates namely Delhi and Amar Singh Gates. As you enter the fort, you will see Muhammad Burj, an octagonal spire. There are also two mosques here - Moti Masjid and Nagina Masjid - built of white marble.

Another historical wonder of Agra is Itimad-ud-daula's Tomb, a Mughal mausoleum. This is the first ever tomb built of marble in the country. It is the tomb of Mir Gheyas Beg. Its Indo-Islamic architecture is impressive and it rests in the middle of a beautiful garden.
