Kanchipuram

The Ekambaranathar Temple in Kanchipuram was raised by the Pallavas and was later transformed by the Chola and Vijayanagar kings. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva in the form of Prithvi (earth). Prithvi is one of the five basic elements on earth. The temple complex is huge and sprawls over 20-acre. It also features a tall south Gopuram rising to a height of 58.5 m. In total this temple features 11 stories which make it one of the tallest in South India.

The Vaikunta Perumal Temple is another popular shrine with history going back to the 8th century. It was raised by Nandivarma Pallava. The temple is adorned with battle scenes showing Pallava valor. Pilgrims must also visit the Varadaraja Temple dedicated to Devarajaswamy, a form of Lord Vishnu. It has a 100-pillared hall which is believed to be constructed by the Vijayanagar kings. Though the temple has many splendid wonders, the large chain carved out of a single stone here remains the most fascinating one.

Also visit the Kailasanathar Temple belonging to the 8th century AD. It was built by the Pallava kings and features beautiful looking panel depicting Shiva and Parvati. Its architecture looks similar to that of the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram.

The structure of Kamakshi Amman Temple is also imposing and lures every traveller visiting Kanchipuram. This temple is dedicated to goddess Parvati and welcomes streams of pilgrims.
