Incredible India Cultural, Historical & Spiritual

Madurai

Madurai in Tamil Nadu is counted among the oldest cities of India. The city has a significant history when it was ruled by Pandya kings. This is a beautiful cultural centre graced with some noteworthy attractions. Meenakshi Temple remains the most popular place of tourist interest in the city. The temple has earned extreme popularity due to its brilliant sculpture. It sprawls over an area of 15 acres and has a grand hall with thousand pillars. The temple is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and lord Shiva. This is a very old temple which was reconstructed in the 14th century CE and underwent many renovations later as well. The temple complex has many gopurams, including Maravarman Sundara Pandyan, Chitra gopuram, Vembaturara Ananda Nambi, Kadaka Gopuram, Mottai gopuram, etc.

Madurai has a fascinating history which shows in the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace located here. This 17th-century palace was built in 1636 AD by King Thirumalai Nayak. The palace has a grand courtyard with massive circular pillars. The whole palace complex has been divided into two major parts, Swarga Vilasam and Ranga Vilasam. The palace conducts special Light & Sound shows narrating story of Silappathikaram.

For shopping lovers, nothing is as fascinating as shopping at Puthu Mandapam. This vibrant street market sells everything, including jewellery, fashion accessories, scarves, fabrics, handicrafts, etc. It is a great place to bag souvenirs.

Among the oldest churches of Madurai, the name of Saint Mary’s Cathedral always tops the list. Many architectural styles like - European, Roman and Continental have been used to create this masterpiece. Its striking bell towers in Roman architectural style catch the attention of all.
